Job Title:  Campus Peer-to-Peer Advocate & Outreach Worker

About Monsoon: Monsoon Asians and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity is a culturally specific organization with a mission to end gender-based violence in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities across Iowa.  The organization serves all 99 counties in Iowa.

Position Summary: Monsoon is seeking a Campus Peer-to-Peer Advocate & Outreach Worker in Des Moines to provide culturally-specific peer-to-peer support to victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, dating violence, stalking and human trafficking in API communities on campuses in Eastern Iowa as well as assist in the planning and implementing of outreach events at Drake University, Iowa State University and Des Moines Community College (and occasionally on allied campuses) with a focus on API, Asian American and Asian international students; API student groups; university programs and community organizations addressing gender-based violence; and official agencies, such as Public Safety.

Reports To:  Assistant Director/Campus Advocacy Program Coordinator in Des Moines

Work Hours: 10 hours per week (40 hours per month) under a one-year contract

Hours & Availability:

  • Works 10 hours a week on direct services and community outreach;
  • Completes trainings on addressing domestic violence and sexual assault conducted by Monsoon, ICADV (Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence), IowaCASA (Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault)

Requirements:

  • Be fluent in English and speak at least one API language, particularly Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Hindi, Telugu, Nepali, Cambodian/Khmer or Burmese;
  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate program or possess an undergraduate degree in a related field or a field linked to interdisciplinary studies;
  • Be knowledgeable about or interested in ending gender-based violence;
  • Demonstrate ability to organize information, ascertain the needs of victims/survivors and respond to complex issues;
  • Be clear and articulate in conversations;
  • Demonstrate competent writing skills that include the ability to compose varied correspondence in a precise, accurate and easily understandable manner;
  • Possess strong skills with social media, optimizing content and technology
  • Have good problem-solving skills;
  • Be able to work with diverse groups of people and to handle difficult or sensitive situations and people tactfully;
  • Possess strong initiative, creativity and motivation, including being able to work under pressure and with deadlines;
  • Under reasonable conditions, be prepared to drive own insured vehicle and travel as part of work responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct innovative community outreach and education at the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College with a focus on API, Asian American and Asian international students; API student groups; university programs and community organizations addressing gender-based violence; and official agencies, such as Public Safety;
  • Be engaged responsibly on social media about Monsoon;
  • Help create outreach materials, such as event posters and flyers;
  • Commit to non-violence, including the non-violent discipline of children;
  • Be a supportive listener and peer advocate;
  • Accurately and effectively interpret on behalf of victims/survivors;
  • Protect the confidentiality of all victims/survivors;
  • Work with other Monsoon staff and volunteers to meet the needs of victims/survivors;
  • Maintain accurate victim/survivor files;
  • Attend twice-monthly advocate meetings and on-going trainings;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Directors or Campus Advocacy Program Coordinator

Hourly wage: $15 per hour
