In 2009, Monsoon was the recipient of federal funding for a proposal to gather the stories of former refugees from Laos and Cambodia on sexual violence. “Unburdening Our Mothers’ Backs: Oral History Project” covered stories of child sexual abuse; sexual assaults in refugee camps; marriages by capture; sexual exploitation while in transition to host countries; and rape in the United States.
