On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Asian and Pacific Islander elders gathered at Monsoon’s main office in Des Moines, IA, for our monthly Kupuna Care Days event.

A professional photographer was on-site to capture portraits that honor the elders’ stories, strength, and spirit. Alongside the photography, a videographer recorded oral interviews—heartfelt reflections and joyful memories shared by the elders. These recordings are part of an ongoing initiative to preserve the legacy and wisdom of Asian and Pacific Islander elders in Iowa for future generations. The gathering also included a shared meal, with elders bringing dishes from their cultures and sampling foods from across the community.

Parents and their children gathered for Mothers of Monsoon’s monthly Wisdom Circle on Saturday, May 10 at Franklin Library in Des Moines. Local artist and yoga instructor, @lauratoddart led a “Grown Up + Me Movement” session where young participants worked with their moms to learn various breathing techniques, partner poses and stretches. There were plenty of laughs and smiles to help kick off Mother’s Day weekend! 💐

💫 What to Expect: Fun movement activities, simple yoga poses, and calm breathing exercises tailored for grown-ups and kids to enjoy together. Bring your own water bottles. Yoga mats and a light snack will be provided. Feel free to bring your own yoga mats if you prefer!

On April 24, 2025, Monsoon advocate Danya Albert shared about Monsoon’s services while engaging in a button-making activity with college students and community members at the inaugural College Communities Collaboration: Take Back the Night at Newbo City Market in Cedar Rapids. Take Back The Night, which addresses safety and empowerment, is held in many parts of the country during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The Cedar Rapids event was hosted by Coe College, Cornell College, Mount Mercy University and Kirkwood Community College.
